TURGUTREİS
The name “Turgutreis” was given to the town in the memory of great Turkish admiral Turgut Reis (Dragut) who was born in here in 16th century. Known as Dragut in the western world, Turgut Reis is especially well known with Malta Siege of Ottomans. The monument located a few kilometers away from the town, near the sea shows the first place he set sail.
The town carrying the name of this great admiral, is still a trade centre located on the west of peninsula. Goods produced in the surrounding villages are delivered to transport companies or bakeries, shops and other service points from here.
A long shoreline from Akyarlar to Kadıkalesi is connected to Turgutreis Town. Having an individual capacity to be a district, Turgutreis is pretty much popular today with its competing touristy facilities and its marina.
Shops, shopping centres, restaurants opened within D-Marin as well as art activities, fairs and races held in marina enlivened Turgutreis.
This coastal town located on the west of Bodrum peninsula, took its name from Ottoman fleet’s great admiral Turgut Reis known as ‘Dragot’ in Europe.
Turgutreis also gained international customs feature with D-Marin put into service so it improves day by day. Cruises from D-Marin especially to Greek Islands Kos and Kalimnos are highly attract attention. The bent of islands ranging towards west is one of the places where there are many boats sank in shallow waters in the ancient ages. The first underwater archeological excavations caused the opening of Bodrum Underwater Archeological Museum was made here.
Strong and casual wind and flows, even if not for inexperienced ones, but for professional surfers they make Turgutreis a paradise. After a tiring day, the sunset scene that can be watched by sea or off shore will spellbind visitors.
The market full of fresh, vivid and bright colors held on Saturdays, where peasants exhibit fruits and vegetables they produce are worth to see. It is a town located between Karaincir, Akyarlar, Turgutreis and Kadıkalesi and full of natural beaches each one more beautiful than the other.
